There's a reason the words "Chekhov" and "musical" aren't normally conjoined, but this freehand adaptation of the "The Seagull" rarely takes flight not because Maury McIntyre's jazz score is earthbound. Quite the contrary — there are a couple of soaring moments, even if the fleet instrumental accompaniment can't satisfy the leaden demands of Nick Salamone's unwieldy book, which transplants the action to the Greenwich Village Beat era.

Putting my initial reservations aside, I found this clever "free adaptation" of Chekhov's tragic play to be a delightful Set...
