Times Description

Located at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains and the magnificent Rose Bowl, this 61.1-acre park is a fine place for either just sitting and looking around or doing any of a number of activities. The grass is thick and green, and if you use the fitness circuit -- you run around and do each of the exercises depicted on a wooden sign at each station -- you'll notice that the layout of the park is spacious and pretty.

The baseball diamond is huge, complete with scoreboard and elaborate lights for nighttime play; the two softball fields are smaller but less imposing. There are also five tennis courts, but you should call ahead to make sure there aren't classes going on when you plan to play. You might want to rent out the bandshell if you're in the mood for live music at your next barbecue.

If you're planning any kind of shindig more formal than just hanging out on the swingset, you'll need to reserve at least 10 days in advance. Park officials will help you determine which area of the park would best suit your needs based on number of guests and preferred recreational activity.

Brookside also is one of a handful of Pasadena parks open to off-leash dogs. Located adjacent to the Rose Bowl, this 25-acre park features canine-friendly wide open spaces full of lush green grass, trees, a softball field and a small picnic area for accompanying humans. There is a catch to the seemingly liberal Pasadena off-leash law. You must be actively training your dog to heel, come when called or stay--no ear-flapping fun runs here. Please note, the park is open to dogs from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on weekends.
