Mississippi and Chicago traditionally beckoned blues fans. But nightclub owners Vince Jordan and Joe Irwin hope to shine a larger blues spotlight on Long Beach. They opened the Cellar in March as a downtown hub for blues, country and rockabilly. The Cellar's name was licensed from a legendary Fort Worth club where guitar slingers such as Stevie Ray Vaughan famously played. Yet Jordan promises the club will be more California than Texas. "We're carrying on a tradition," he says. "We're not trying to duplicate."
