About
Located on the second floor of a modern commercial center, Spazio is a stylish, glass-ensconced restaurant that adds a youthful attitude to the often-staid Valley dining scene. Its smart, sexy look includes a marble-topped mahogany bar illuminated by sleek hanging amber lamps, an impressive Italianesque wall mural and candlelit tables dressed in white linen. An expansive patio, where fountains muffle the noise of Ventura Boulevard traffic, attracts some folks, while others come to Spazio for regular jazz performances.
The extensive menu reflects the cooking of both Italy and France, with liberal touches of California cuisine. Some of the intriguing appetizers include artichoke hearts in a luxurious Chardonnay-cheese fondue, a terrine of beets and goat cheese accented with papaya, and Dungeness crab cakes. The menu also offers a selection of crêpes--the seafood variety topped with Champagne-lobster sauce is excellent--that make good starters. Italian entrees include pastas, such as chicken ravioli with walnuts, Gorgonzola and creamy Parmesan sauce (a fine dish despite the paucity of Gorgonzola) and osso buco. Among other options are sesame-crusted ahi with Pinot Noir sauce, blackened whitefish with a balsamic-lemon vinaigrette, and mustard-crusted rack of lamb in Bordelaise sauce. Meal for two: $70.
