David J's best of L.A.

Know something we don't?
The Miracle Mile is better known for its varieties of Mom-friendly museums than rock-and-roll possibilities, but the El Rey evens the score a bit as the go-to venue for bands too big for The Echo but not quite up to the Wiltern. Catch a steady stream of KCRW-approved indie-pop, backpacker hip-hop and the occasional top-40 act honing its live chops in a well-appointed Art Deco setting. But do your boozing beforehand -- drinks are pricey and there isn't really anywhere to congregate, and the new upstairs restaurant won't let you chill without ordering. Luna Park on La Brea, Sushi Eyaki on Wilshire and Swingers are reliable for nearby bites, but the drinking is limited to the lame Little Bar and, um, Busby's. Hit up the Fairfax corridor instead. Parking is a monster, but south of Wilshire is easier than north for street spaces.
