Times Description

One of the largest art museums in the world, LACMA boasts more than 100,000 works ranging from ancient treasures to 21st century masterpieces. Try not to feel overwhelmed as you make your way through the more than 20 different sections devoted to contemporary art, photography, European painting, Japanese art, costumes and much more.

Past blockbuster shows at LACMA included "Arts in Latin America, 1492-1820," "Dan Flavin: A Retrospective," "Dali: Painting & Film," "Jasper Johns: Numbers," "Ansel Adams at 100" and "Diane Arbus Revelations."

In 2008, the Broad Contemporary Art Museum opened on the LACMA campus, inaugurating a new era in the institution's illustrious history. The new museum was designed by Renzo Piano and houses works by some of the biggest names in contemporary art -- Andy Warhol, Richard Serra, Jeff Koons, Ed Ruscha, Roy Lichtenstein, Cindy Sherman, Richard Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel and Damien Hirst.

Visiting

Visiting LACMA can be an overwhelming experience, so plan ahead to make the most of your time. The museum is located at 5905 Wilshire Boulevard, between Fairfax and Curson avenues. From the Santa Monica Freeway (10), take Fairfax Avenue north two miles to Wilshire Boulevard.

The museum is open every day except Wednesdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Hours are 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays; 12 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Fridays; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

General admission is $12 for adults and $8 for seniors and students, but there are a number of good deals worth knowing about. After 5 p.m. every day, you may pay what you wish. On the second Tuesday of each month, general admission to the permanent galleries and non-ticketed exhibitions is free to all. Select holiday Mondays are also free in partnership with Target.

Parking is available in the 6th Street parking garage, located east of Fairfax Avenue. The charge is $7. Another parking option is the LACMA Spaulding lot (Spaulding Avenue south of Wilshire), which also costs $7. However, vehicles entering the 6th Street parking garage or Spaulding lot after 7 p.m. park for free.

Dining and entertainment

The museum offers two dining options: Pentimento Cafe is a fine indoor and outdoor restaurant with a full bar, while Plaza Café offers simpler fare.

Dining options around the museum are somewhat limited. Marie Callender's offers family-style dining, serving a full range of entrees and desserts.

For a quick, healthy lunch, visit Organic To Go, which offers a wide range of all-natural sandwiches, entrees and snacks.
