Bill Engvall's favorite L.A. weekend

Know something we don't?
The expansive bar in and around the lobby of Shade, Manhattan Beach's foremost boutique hotel, Zinc Lounge manages to maintain an exclusive atmosphere without a hint of snobbery. This warmth extends to the personnel--which often includes co-owner and unofficial greeter Milo Bacic--and to the setting, which thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass doors separating the lounge from the patio, is bathed in light during the daytime and comfortably airy at night.
Make no mistake, however, Zinc is an upscale bar. Past the courtyard with the Frank Lloyd Wright-influenced waterfall, bamboo mats and frosted glass line the hallway leading to the "Penthouse," where fine beer awaits on tap. And downstairs there’s an entire wall dedicated to all the awards and features given to the lounge and its parent hotel. One in particular sums up both the clientele here and the modern, Pan-Asian-meets-West-Coast environment: "Yacht-shui"
Prices for the import beer, spirits and thirty-six different wines available by the glass are also not for the beach bum, though that doesn't stop a crowd of well-to-do singles and more mature local sophisticates from gathering for drinks on evenings and weekends. Arrive early if you care to join them; the bar closes at just 11 p.m. so as not to disturb the hotel guests.
