Mexico City’s potent margaritas and filling Cal-Mex fare draw a young, lively crowd, many of whom show up in large, garrulous groups. Dimly lighted and decorated in a theme that can be best described as darkly festive (piñatas and Day of the Dead statuettes), it’s great for those in search of a bustling, loud and scene-y good time. Just don’t fill up on the crisp homemade chips (which come with both red and green tomatillo salsa), and leave room for the spinach tamales, beefy enchiladas and the excellent green mole sauce. Dining here is a great prelude to catching a rock show at The Derby or Tangier, both of which are just a stones throw away.

TIPS: There is a small, free parking lot behind the restaurant, but it fills up quickly. Street parking isn’t too hard to come by on this under-populated stretch of Hillhurst. Also, Avocado is the cross street so it’s easy to remember.
