Times Description

Ever notice how dour-faced hipsters are too busy looking cool to ever actually crack a smile in Silverlake or Echo Park bars?  That may changed in November 2008 when Stinkers debuted at 2939 W. Sunset Blvd (right across the street from the Silverlake Lounge).

Saints & Sinners lounge owner Bobby Green has turned the former under attended Johnny's space into a truck-stop-themed watering hole, with a full liquor license.  Nearly 5000 vintage aluminum beer cans (think Hamm’s, Olympia, Ballentine etc.) from around the country line the walls here, and bartenders will be able to correspond with passing truckers on I-5 with a CB Radio set up behind the bar (staff will have the ability to run correspondence through the sound system).  Throw in a few 1970s posters of Burt Reynolds, aluminum diamond-patterned walls and an honest-to-god hood from a late 1978 Trans Am Firebird on a wall in the “Trucker’s Lounge,” and you have the makings of a bar Bo “Bandit” Darville could feel right at home inside.

But the most talked about design feature at Stinkers this fall may be the mechanized skunks that line the top of the bar.  Green has the stuffed, backwards-faced skunks rigged so that when a bartender pulls a cord, steam will come out of the skunks' backsides.  No word yet on if they have figured out a way to make the steam (which is actually liquid CO2) smell anything like the real skunk spray, but we are guessing the effect of the steam vapor should sufficiently get the point across without scaring off bargoers.

The food component is still being worked out, says Green, but he promises some thematically linked items will be served at the bar, which debuted Thursday, November 6th.  “We’ll have some food,” he said inside the bar in October pre-opening.  “It’s still being worked out, but we’ll of course have peanuts and Slim-Jims as snacks at the bar." What? No grits or tater tots?  "The guy next door at Local might put together a limited happy hour menu for us,” Green added.

Just look for the aluminum trucker diamond-plate door with a mysterious “S” branded into it, or the neon blue and white skunk above the entrance.  “I’m doing everything I can just to make people smile,” Green says.  “Hopefully people will like it.”

My favorite night at this place is mondays, they have DJ jewgold and Thunderbolt. Nothing like drinking PBR and listening to the soundtrack of every house party in 1977
