Before Pinkberry or Coldstone Creamery, there was Mashti Malone’s. For almost 30 years, owner Mashti Shirvani has been creating ice cream with unexpected and exotic ingredients such as rosewater, saffron, and cardamom. Don’t worry, if you’re not a big experimenter, flavors such as pomegranate, Turkish coffee and mango are available as well as the Mashti, an ice cream sandwich made of paper-thin wafers. Because no preservatives, eggs, refined sugar or artificial colors and flavors are used in the ice cream, health-conscious Angelenos as well as foodies who love to challenge their palates flock to Mashti’s modest strip-mall location.
