Times Description

Formerly the Stork, "H.Wood" quietly opened in late 2008 to an in-the-know crowd.   Loyal Pennings and John Terzian are still co-owners of the space (near the Roosevelt Hotel) but the duo have now partnered up with former Teddy's/Tropicana Bar fixture Amanda Scheer Demme.  Gone is the Stork's harsh post-industrial feel.  H.Wood has transformed the bi-level bar into a warm living room-esque hang replete with brown leather couches, wood tables and soft lighting.

Subtle design tweaks abound at the new lounge, such as new sconces, metalic tables upstairs (an indoor bar upstairs is now replaced with cozy seating options) and even a faux-library near a staircase.

The vibe at H.wood is developing, but it feels analagous to happening scenes at other area lounges, such as Bardot.  The crowds have yet to swamp H.Wood, which is fine with most velvet-rope weary night owls.  Owners say the door will not be as difficult as Bardot or Teddy's (at least initially), and that's a good thing.  Still, this is Hollywood, so a sense of style is a must if you are heading here in 2009.  Scheer-Demme says she is hoping the bar will be a meeting place for artists of all different kinds this year, and the jovial feel of the space is certainly conducive to conversations between like-minded artistic types.  Still, invariably, flirting always takes over the night as the bar enters the early morning hours (DJs here play a fun mix of everything from 1980s new wave to 1970s rock--but everything played has a "sexy" feel.)

It's not yet known if the bar will offer food, but there is a full kitchen in place at 1738 N. Orange.  Hot nights here are Saturdays, where Cher even turned up here randomly one night in early 2009.

Your best bet here is to valet, as parking on N. Orange is difficult, to say the least (it's mostly all permit).  If you don't want to pay $10 or more, you can always park at the nearby Hollywood & Highland complex.
