About

"I wanted something bohemian chic," said Ivan Kane of the "slightly beat-up and distressed" decor inside his latest venture, Cafe Was (technically spelled Cafe Wa_s, but we refuse to go there...sorry, Ivan).  The man behind former legendary clubs like Forty Deuce and Deep (he opened the influential nightclub Deep in 2000, long before the W Hotel came knocking on the neighborhood's doorstep) now brings a brand new concept to Hollywood.

The 200-capacity, bi-level supper club boasts a grand piano in the middle, three bars, falase balconies, mini lounge areas upstairs, and a large patio. The main room is "so warm and inviting that Alicia Keys could drop in unannounced prior to the release of her CD and the 100 or so people there will be the luckiest people in the world," said Kane, who hopes he can get both the early theater crowd (food will be served) before they hit a show at the Pantages, and the late-night drinking denizens of the "new" Hollywood (it will be open until 2 a.m. nightly).

So what's on the menu at Was?  How about bistro fare like moules frites, onion soup au gratin, or Was' signature bistro burger topped with prosciutto, brie and a fried egg.

Of course, drinks will be a big draw at Cafe Was, too. Expect signature classic cocktails (selected spirits served by the flask) and a large wine and champagne menu.

Cafe Was has already hosted a few private events, and will open August 30.

Its most unique feature? A so-called "staircase to nowhere" -- which, just as described, dead-ends into a wall (see picture above).

Music at the New Orleans-style bar and restaurant with exposed brick and candles everywhere will be selected by Kane himself (playlists that change nightly, not DJs) and you can expect to hear everything from Gainsbourg to the Germs.

A fantastic first date choice.
