As unpleasant a word as "gastropub" may be, Northeast L.A. has one to proudly call its own on the formerly sleepy (after 8 p.m. anyway) York Boulvard in Highland Park. Opened by a pair of former bartenders from the Edendale Grill, this classed-up neighborhood bar gets all the little details right, from the bent birdcage-looking light fixtures dangling from the exposed-beam high ceilings to the rotating roster of quality microbrews, including a host of favorites from the Pasadena-based Craftsman Brewing Company to the IPA-to-end-all-IPAs, Racer 5. Step up to the bar and order from the tall chalkboard of specials along the exposed brick wall and you'll be treated to a contemporary upgrade from traditional pub fare, including cheddar cheese burgers, blackened catfish and the legally mandated fish-and-chips.
