L.A. Beaches: North to South
Picks by Liam-Gowing
Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach is made up of three separate mini-beaches named, from west to east, El Pescador, La Piedra and El Matador. These hideaway beaches are a considerable drive from the city but many beach-goers think they are secrets for secluded sunbathing. Each has limited pay parking for 20 to 40 cars and rough trails or stairways down to the ocean. El Matador is the largest and most beautiful with 2,000 feet of ocean frontage and natural arches in the rock formations. Body surfing is poor because of rip currents. The other two each have less than 1,000 feet of ocean frontage. All have chemical toilets and El Matador has a few picnic tables. Lifeguard service is limited to summer only.
