Times Description

This is a relatively quiet, family oriented beach but it still has its share of sexy bodies in skimpy bikinis. The beach consists of grungy sand slopes and is the narrowest of the South Bay cities. Redondo has relatively limited beach frontage for the large inland population it serves. Yet historically, it has had strong name identification.

Most visitors are drawn to the piers, a short straight one and a connecting sideways pier which together are called Fisherman's Wharf. Both are loaded with shops and restaurants, almost to the point where it is hard to see the ocean. A pay parking structure is so close you can almost reach out and touch the piers.

The commercial zone with amusement arcade, games, rides and sportfishing outlets extends north of the garage, around a boat basin and along a picturesque walkway where local atists occasionally display their works. There is a busy sportfishing operation. -- Los Angeles Times

Redondo Breakwater Surf Spot

HUGE lefts thunder off the jetty north of Kings Harbor a few times each winter. Immortalized in several surf videos including ''Endless Summer,'' it can still be perfect at 15 feet. A very powerful left, the first wave of each set bounces off the jetty and swings up the beach, forming a wedge at the takeoff. Going right is bad. But the left peels off 50 or 60 yards. Faces are usually smooth at the Breakwater unless a south or northwest wind is blowing.

This spot is best on low tides and doesn't happen for real below 6 feet. At 6 or 8 feet, it can be heavily crowded, but it's fun to watch the crowd dwindle when the sets start reaching 10 feet. Unless you have experience in double-overhead surf and a big gun you are familiar with, pass this one up. It's definitely not worth bringing a big board into town on the off-chance it will break. And if it does, you won't want to tackle a new break that big your first time out. The Breakwater doesn't break at all during the summer.

To get there, take Sepulveda Boulevard to Herondo Street and head west. Turn left on North Harbor Drive one block and turn right on Yacht Club Way. Metered parking is available. -- Van Weyden
