About
Garden Grove Shotokan offers the kind of old-fashioned karate Mr. Miyagi taught to Daniel-san in the "Karate Kid" movies. Chief instructor Greg Scott earned his black belt from Tsutomu Ohshima, one of the first karate instructors from Japan to arrive in the United States. Both the school and the self-defense instruction are highly traditional.
Scott has patterned the 3,000-square-foot facility after a classical Japanese dojo, installing a finished hardwood floor, makiwara (punching boards) and a Japanese garden with a waterfall in the entryway. Japanese calligraphy adorns the walls. The studio also features changing rooms, showers, a kitchen, free weights and a variety of bag gear. "We get a lot of really nice compliments on the school," Scott says. -- Jim Coleman
