About
The Lummis Home and Garden is an odd oasis in the middle of Northeast Los Angeles where Highland Park, Mt. Washington & Eagle Rock meet. Behind the rusty chain link fence is a charming, faithful rendition of a native Californian and Mediterranean landscape, with pines, cacti and other succulents. Charles Lummis, the first city editor for the Los Angeles Times and founder of the nearby Southwest Museum, must have really been into the water-conservation cause. Signs are posted everywhere explaining how to save water, what plants are "water thrifty," and the like.
The turn-of-the-century house is a low-ceilinged, modest affair built over a 12-year period out of native materials like boulders from the Arroyo Seco and discarded telegraph poles. The interior is sparsely furnished with authentic period pieces and remains. The garden, with its minimum of shade, becomes a hot spot in the summer.
Tours: Tours are available on a walk-in basis when the house is open.
