Griffith Observatory

A local landmark since 1935, the Griffith Observatory sits atop Mount Hollywood and — on a clear day or evening — offers an astounding view of Los Angeles and the famous Hollywood sign.

Featured in many movies (Rebel Without A Cause, The Rocekteer), the observatory offers a bit of Hollywood history. At night, with the shining lights of the city below, the observatory becomes a romantic hot spot.

The observatory is owned, operated and financed by the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks. It was a gift to the city by Col. Griffith J. Griffith (1850-1919), who also donated Griffith Park and the Greek Theatre.

The observatory is a nonprofit institution that provides information on astronomy and sciences to the public. It is divided into three areas: the Hall of Science astronomy museum, the telescopes and the planetarium theater. All are open to the public and, except planetarium shows, are free of charge. The telescopes operate only when the sky is clear.
