About
In Eastern lore, the Bodhi Tree was where a Buddha sat until he gained enlightenment. In West Hollywood lore, the Bodhi Tree is a bookstore specializing in all things spiritual--and it's a great place to bring a date.
The sprawling, multiroom compound on Melrose Avenue sits in the shadow of the Pacific Design Center, and commits plenty of space to subjects like homeopathy, Eastern mysticism and New Age philosophy. There's also free herbal tea, sweet-smelling incense, whole rooms devoted to (general interest) fiction and poetry, and a rack of eclectic magazines.
Don't leave without peeking out back; there's an actual 35-foot-tall Bodhi tree growing in the yard. Inside, there's a framed leaf from a tree in India, and pictures of various spiritual leaders cover the wall space above the stacks of books. Bodhi Tree hosts regular readings, workshops and signings.--Jeremy Rosenberg
L.A. has a wealth of exceptional independent bookstores. If you're looking for more literary options, try one of these stalwart shops: Book Soup has a fine selection of general fiction, non-fiction and magazines; Los Feliz's Skylight Books is an excellent neighborhood shop that is happy to do special orders; A Different Light Bookstore offers a wide array of Gay and Lesbian literature, from books to magazines and beyond.
Tips: Melrose Ave. parking got you down? No worries. Bodhi Tree offers free valet parking for same-day bookstore purchases of $10 or more. Just bring in your valet ticket and they'll exchange it for the valet fee of $3.50.
