Know something we don't?
Venerated, celebrated and sometimes banned, author Judy Blume, the patron saint of young adult fiction, receives a loving tribute on Blumesday. Well known for Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret; Forever; Tiger Eyes and Iggie's House, her books were -- and still are -- known for their relatable characters and frank approach to thorny subjects like racism, religion, masturbation, sexuality and class mobility. In fact, her frankness has made her one of the most frequently challenged authors, according to the American Library Association.
Spoofing the annual James Joyce celebration Bloomsday (trust us, Ulysses has nothing on Blubber), Blumesday brings together a group of writers and performers who will read passages from their favorite Judy Blume works:
Jill Soloway ("Six Feet Under") and Carrie Aizley ("Campus Ladies") -- Deenie
Melanie Hutsell ("Saturday Night Live") -- Forever
Joanna Rubiner -- It's Not the End of the World
Andy Corren and Maggie Rowe -- TBA
Blume herself might even appear via a video uplink. Hosted by Ronna & Beverly. Music by Candypants.
*NOTE: Reservations are encouraged; call M Bar. Patrons are advised to arrive no later than 7:30 p.m. On top of the $8 cover charge, you'll have to shell out $10 for M Bar's "food."
