Dive restaurants like Blue Cube used to be the norm in downtown L.A. But the terrain has slowly and subtly shifted as lofts and luxury apartments proliferate throughout the area. Upscale is now the keyword. Mom-and-pop slop shops have vanished, giving way to business casual bistros where cloth napkins and wine lists set the standard. At Blue Cube, however, it’s still 1994 five days a week. Where else can a tired and hungry downtown office escapee grab the unbeatable 3-3-3 combo -- three pancakes, three eggs and three pieces of ham, bacon or sausage -- all for under $5? A wide variety of burgers and sandwiches fill out the lunch menu, but Blue Cube’s ethnic fare gives the place its heart and soul. There’s a chicken teriyaki bowl, a shrimp or salmon teriyaki bowl, yakisoba noodles with chicken, beef or veggies, and a California roll combo that comes with miso soup.
