Times Description

L.A. Live's more club-friendly version of the Nokia Theater will host acts who have grown off the club circuit but are still reaching for arenas.  Beck broke in the space in early November, with acts ranging from Colorado's buzzing electro-rappers 3OH!3 to local rock legends X already booked up until the end of the year.

The 59,000 square feet venue boasts a 2300 capacity space with high ceilings, a massive state-of-the-art lighting rig and stage and specially designed panels on the walls to enhance the sonic experience.

There's not a bad view in the house, even from the 900 seats in the balcony.  Music industry vets should feel very comfortable here....a VIP area between the lower level and the balcony includes a lounge, banquettes, a private bar, and even several private cabanas.

Further not-exactly-punk-rock features at Club Nokia include the "interactive" experience in the the lobby. Music fans are able to browse a bit of Club Nokia history (even though it just opened) via digital phones and kiosks.

The positives at this club don't have to do with aura. They're more basic: The sound is very good (though some patrons are of the opinion it is too loud), the sight-lines superb, the bathrooms and bar space plentiful. Then there's the floor plan, which operates on a kind of optical illusion: The main floor is tiered, allowing for folks in the back to feel closer, and a large, extremely steep balcony puts others in a helicopter position above the stage.

The back of the club doesn't feel so bad when it's floating in the air. And the overhang the balcony creates above the dance floor is less oppressive and sound-muffling than some.

Tip: You don't have to pay for parking at the massive L.A. Live complex.  Look for metered spots (free after 6 p.m.) on sidestreets such as Flower or 11th street near the complex.  Just make sure you read all posted signs before you arrive, and get to the show early.  There are typically many free meters just after folks in the area leave work before 7 p.m. within a few blocks of LA Live.  The area is now safe to walk around at night, despite the nearly empty sidestreets.
