Know something we don't?
What does a Californian know about bagels anyways? Bagelmania has studiously followed the New York preparation methods. The result is a shiny coat and chewy taste, tell-tale signs of authenticity at the heart of Bagelmania’s popularity. The Costa Mesa cafe is the second location for this family-owned enterprise. Headed up by the owner’s daughter, Natasha Glasgow, the restaurant serves breakfast, salads, sandwiches, muffins, scones, gourmet coffee, smoothies, fresh carrot juice, wheatgrass and more. Its version of the everything bagel is called the Mania and it’s made with onion, garlic and poppy seeds. Where other bagel shops just put the flavors on top, Bagelmania bakes the tasty stuff right in. Old-schoolers can go for the traditional bagel and lox with all the classic toppings, while the experimental set can choose a pizza bagel or a Mexican bagel with cheese and jalapeño peppers. Seasonal offerings include the Hawaiian in summer, a coconut and pineapple creation that can be topped with a matching Hawaiian cream cheese. For more unique things to eat, you’ll have to drive past the fast-food chains in the immediate area and head two miles down Harbor Boulevard to the corner of Newport Boulevard. Around there, you can have a classic OC quickie at Taco Mesa or TK Burger and party with the in-crowd at Sutra Lounge, the Detroit Bar and Chronic Cantina.
Tips: Don’t get stuck thinking bagels are just breakfast food. Lunch is a fine time to visit Bagelmania for a bagel sandwich, a sandwich melt, salad or even a breakfast bagel with egg, etc. Whatever you choose, take the time to eat slowly and notice the way the bagel looks and tastes differently than most.
