2009 L.A. St. Patrick's Day parties
Interested in getting your jig on? The Auld Dubliner will have bagpipes, Irish folk rock from Hoist the Colors, and Celtic-Punk-Rockabilly courtesy of Craic Haus on March 17th. Located near the waterfront, the Dubliner is sure to be the Long Beach destination of choice this year for traditional Irish food (their specialty is the "Irish dish boxty"), drink, and entertainment.
Opened in 1936, in this location since 1949, Bergin's is what some aficionados call an Irish American pub. Known for its shamrock covered walls, smooth Guinness, Irish coffee and hearty Irish menu, Tom Bergins opens its doors at 6 a.m. this year to welcome St. Patty's day revelers. We recommend starting out early; TB's is quite the popular destination for Fairfax district/Miracle Mile locals during happy hour, and they will be full by 8 p.m. or earlier.
Just up the avenue from Tom Bergin's you'll find another Fairfax favorite: Molly Malone's. This is a true beer lovers' bar; a local favorite with a dark, old-fashioned interior that attracts the neighbors en masse every St. Patrick's Day (and every weekend). Doors open at 5 a.m.
Nothing Irish about this bar, except a couple of beers on tap, but it's very much a neighborhood pub. March 17th, Nolans will be busy regardless, serving their signature Irish stew and corned beef sandwiches. With 16 draft beers on tap, plasma screens and friendly "Cheers"-esque vibe, Nolans attracts a wide range of "industry" types from nearby studios for cheap drinks and tasty bar fare. Open 8:30 a.m.-2 a.m.
Built in 1970 by the people behind Tam O' Shanter Inn on Los Feliz Boulevard, this below-street-level downtown pub with its dark wood paneling, pressed tin ceiling, polished wood floors, brass rails and mahogany bar has been used as a location for several Hollywood productions, including "Good Night, and Good Luck." It caters to a lunchtime and after-work Financial District crowd, and the food is a cut above most pubs. On the 17th, there will be a traditional Irish bagpiper along with Djs and pints of Guinness for $5. Plus, Casey's double-decker bus (complete with mobile pub) will be cruising around the area, making stops at Cole's, Seven Grand, and the Golden Gopher. Reserve a seat for $30.
An endearing Pogues-meets-Beach Boys spot with four Irish and English beers on tap as well as a cider. The wood-everywhere theme evokes "dockside" to very homey effect, and the food is proudly rustic and tasty.
Guinness, Bass, Harp and Smithwick on tap will flow freely on St. Patrick's Day at this find. It's dark here inside, but once your eyes adjust you'll find that the room's well appointed, the locals are friendly and the beer is fresh. Tuesday, the bar opens at 8 a.m. with an Irish Breakfast special and live music begins here as well bright and early (9 a.m.) with a set by Sligo Rags. Irish dancers and three other bands will entertain drinkers here until closing time. Get thee to 32 early if you want to partake in the fun (and fantastic corned beef & Irish Whiskey).
Looking for a real Boston-style pub this St. Patrick's Day? Sonny's has your Beantown fix. Try the New England clam chowder, clam boats (fried clams on a roll) and lobster rolls and talk up your Irish roots, just like they do in Allston every March at the bar. Enjoy acoustic music in the afternoon and a live band from 10:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Opens at 10:30 a.m. for those early risers.
This bar is justly famous for its weekly turtle races. But come St. Patrick's Day, you can bet the Marina del Rey party set will race to get here early for drinks, not reptiles. A bit of a dive, but Bass, Harp and Newcastle along with diner food and amiable staff and darkness, should help the proceedings here. They open at 6 a.m., serving Irish breakfast.
An Irish immigrant himself, owner William O'Sullivan says his classic pub was sustained in its first three years by other overseas Irish. Since then, this very comfortable pub with its plank floors, brick walls, wood paneling and multiple flat-screen TVs has become a favorite for all Westside drinkers. A perfect choice for St. Patty's Day, if you get here early enough, that is (the bar opens at 6 a.m.). $20 cover after 10 a.m.
St. Patrick's Day will be bonkers at this pier institution. Bring a sober friend to drive you home, because Bloody Mary and Screwdriver pitchers are only $5 until noon.
Although this is hardly the most authentic spot to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, the Westin Bonaventure's new-ish Suede is having a nice party March 17th in honor of the unofficial holiday. $4 beers, well drinks, house wines, and appetizers from 4 to 8 p.m. make this a nice choice for downtown drinkers. Also, $5 "Leprechaun Coolers" all day. A DJ will spin from 5 p.m. onwards.
The Hideout in Santa Monica plans to celebrate the day with ShamRock (yep, that's what they are calling it), a lineup of acoustic music. Come for the music, stay for the half price well drinks and beer. $6 Jameson shots and $8 Irish car bombs specials all night as well.
This Culver City favorite will likely be packed with Sony Pictures employees the 17th, thanks to the bar's free corned beef offering on St. Patrick's Day. Guinness specials as well at Backstage all day and night.
Santa Monica's South has your green beer, green beads, and even green Jell-O shots Tuesday. The Jell-O shots are free and expect Irish food specials all day and night. Sally's Gap plays jaunty Irish jigs from 9 p.m. onwards.
One of the first bars to give irony-adoring hipsters a reason to cross the Glendale Freeway is still a good place to grab a drink. The entire week of St. Patrick's Day, the bar will have drink specials starting at 9 p.m.
This Culver City standby remains an inspired choice for a decent night out in L.A. (minus the velvet rope and attitude). From 11 p.m., find the female leprechaun who will be offering cheap $2 shots and passing out a bit of luck from her "pot of gold."
The same female leprechaun will be offering cheap $2 shots and passing out a bit of luck from her "pot of gold" at Stinker's (which is also co-owned by Saints & Sinners' Bobby Green) Tuesday at 10 p.m. Be there, and make sure you are wearing green, for god's sake.
This Long Beach pub and grill will be open at 9 a.m. to serve Irish breakfast. Then, at 2 p.m., The American Wake performs traditional Irish music and modern pub rock. At 5 p.m., a bagpiper will lift spirits while patrons enjoy $5 green beer pints, "Belfast Bombers" or "Emerald Hearts" shots.
The lovable boozehounds down at Bar 107 are throwing their 4th annual St. Patrick's day blowout starting at 6 a.m., and they're serious about their drinks specials. Come dressed as a nun or a priest and drink for half price. Plus, $3 Guinness and $4 shots of Jameson.
Named for its location on the corner of Seventh Street and Grand Avenue, Seven Grand takes the taxidermy-as-décor theme to a new level. Tuesday's festivities include live Irish folk music by the Regulars from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., a roaming bagpiper, and double-decker bus stop-offs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (see Casey's)
Looking for a great place to celebrate in Orange County this year? With authentic pub signs and multiple days' worth of activities leading up to Tuesday, this might be your spot. An Irish kilt contest takes place Saturday, and on Tuesday the bar will likely be slammed. True Irish food on the menu and a decent Scotch selection as well. Open at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The newest location for this chain of upscale bowling alleys is located at L.A. Live, south downtown's mega-entertainment complex. Tuesday. the bar hosts a St. Patty's Day party featuring a chance to "bowl against Leprechauns." $3 Heinekens all night long. A dress code will be enforced.
A bar & nightclub with discount theme nights like Martini Tuesdays ($2) and Mojito Wednesdays ($3). Tuesday, the Alhambra destination hosts a party with green beer, a DJ, cigar specials and more.
This Huntington Beach bar has some of the best deals going this St. Patty's Day. How about $1 green domestic pints from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (the price goes up to $2 afterwards)? Or, from 3 p.m. onwards try a $3 Guinness pint glass and you can even take home the glass (while supplies last, natch). $5 Irish car bombs and five DJs playing all night as well. Open from 11 a.m.
You know a chain Mexi-joint has fratty cachet when it becomes an official host of the World Series of Beer Pong. Tuesday, it's two-for-one green drinks, a green beer pong contest and the "sexiest Irish lass" wins $200 in cash and prizes. Also, check the "Irish hot potato" contest, which pays $100 in prizes to the winner via a gift card.
