LA Riots’ exclusive Coachella DJ mix
April 23, 2008 10:22am

Growling animal shirts are always a good idea
To listen to the mix in its entirety, click here!

LA Riots don’t do nuance. The Riots’ remixes for A-list electro acts such as Justice, Hot Chip, VHS or Beta and Kid Sister break the faders on every ingredient that matters to a packed dance floor: crunching bass, anthemic hooks and jittery edits that have come to define crossover dance music in the last year. The duo recently signed on with MSTRKRFT’s management and got a record deal with Fools Gold, the label co-owned by Kanye West’s longtime DJ, A-Trak, which has been running the table on flinty hip-hop and electronica. But the Riots made time to craft an L.A. Times-exclusive DJ mix of artists performing at Coachella that they feel define the electro scene this year. It’s 20 minutes of relentless party-starting cuts from France, England, Australia, Brazil and exotic Canada that you can expect to hear in this year’s dance tent, and features several of their own hotly tipped remixes of Coachella artists. Here’s what the Riots had to say about what went into this mix:

“We chose artists that we feel directly relate to what’s going on in electronic music today. It was pretty easy with the lineup at this year’s Coachella because so many of the artists are staples in our sets. Every single song we used in this mix we’ve played in the clubs recently.”

Polish your Wayfarers, don your gold-lamé swimsuit and remember that Paris doesn’t have a lockdown on sweat, sex and techno. We do just fine on our own here.

Avenged Sevenfold will film their Long Beach concert for DVD
April 10, 2008 1:46pm

M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold: Most threatening biceps in metal?

If you’re a fan of Avenged Sevenfold and you’re headed to the show tonight at the Long Beach Arena, you might get a chance to smile (or is it scowl?) for the camera. The thunderous metalcore band from Huntington will be filming the show for a live DVD that Warner Bros. Records will release later this year. There are also plans to use footage from the show in the music video for “Dear God,” the cheery third single from the band’s self-titled album, which has been a strong performer since its release in October.

The DVD will be directed by Core Entertainment’s Rafa Alcantara, who also worked on the band’s 2007 tour documentary, “All Excess.” The plan is for the DVD package to also include a CD of seven unreleased B-sides that were recorded during the making of the “Avenged Sevenfold” album. “We’re coming with a video show, even more pyro and other surprises for our hometown crowd,” singer M. Shadows said. “What better place to shoot a DVD than where it all began?”

Prince to play Coachella
April 9, 2008 9:47am

Prince will play Coachella on Saturday

Coachella just got a royal infusion of talent: Prince is coming 2 the desert.

After weeks of rumors, promoters of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival announced today that they have indeed inked a deal that will add Prince to the lineup of the massive three-day show in Indio, which kicks off April 25.

The Purple One, who will perform April 26, brings major star power to a lineup that some fans had criticized as a lower-wattage affair than in years past. The lineup for this year includes Roger Waters, Jack Johnson, Portishead, the Raconteurs, the Verve, Death Cab for Cutie, Love and Rockets and Kraftwerk.

The Grammy Award winner behind such classics as “Purple Rain,” “When Doves Cry,” “1999” and “Raspberry Beret” adds to Coachella’s history of genre-bending bookings, such as the decision to bring Madonna to the festival’s dance tent in 2006 and Pink Floyd auteur Waters to the main stage this year.

The 49-year-old musical chameleon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the same year he released “Musicology,” a resurgent album in his long and influential career. He followed that up with “3121,” the first album of his to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Ticket information is at coachella.com.

Tom Morello hops onstage with Bruce, will do it again tonight
April 8, 2008 12:41pm

Tom Morello, Rage Against the Machine, the NightwatchmanBruce Springsteen brought a fan up out of the audience to play guitar and sing with E Street Band during last night’s show at the Honda Center in Anaheim. Well, not just any fan. “That was super fun,” said Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine after delivering a searing performance on an electrified version of “The Ghost of Tom Joad.”

In recent years, Morello has hailed the Boss as a key influence on his folk-minded solo career as the Nightwatchman, but until last night, the Rage star had never been on the same stage as Springsteen and his legendary band. Morello sent me a text message today and he was still marveling at the prowess of the E Street players and the fan reception: “Yeah unreal. The place came UNHINGED. That song is well suited to electric rocking.”

Morello won some new fans with the performance — one of them was Springsteen, who looked mighty pleased at the end of the number and invited Morello back tonight to do it again. One more message from the Nightwatchman, a reminder: “Don’t miss April 15 at Troubadour, first night of The Justice Tour. More shredding and folk singing! LOL”

Radiohead knows where you’ll be this summer
April 7, 2008 3:47pm

Thom YorkeFresh off announcing their remix contest for the U.K. band’s “Nude,” Radiohead announced today that they will play two nights at the Hollywood Bowl in August (the 24th and 25th). The dates had long been rumored around town (local nightlife impresario Brent Bolthouse actually hinted at those very dates during his Indie 103.1 radio show in February) and tickets officially go on sale Saturday.

In addition to the two dates at the Bowl, Radiohead headlines two other outdoor SoCal shows: Aug. 27 at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre in Chula Vista and Aug. 28 at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Tickets for both of those engagements also go on sale Saturday.

The band also was revealed today as one of the anchor acts headlining this year’s edition of Lollapalooza. Radiohead will play the Aug. 1 slot at the three-day festival, which again takes place at Chicago’s Grant Park.

Scott Weiland and Velvet Revolver part ways — with update
April 1, 2008 4:44pm

Scott Weiland Velvet Revolver part waysSanctuary Artist Management announced today that “Velvet Revolver founding members Slash, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum and Dave Kushner … are parting ways with singer Scott Weiland.”

“This band is all about its fans and its music, and Scott Weiland isn’t 100% committed to either,” said Slash. “Among other things, his increasingly erratic on-stage behavior and personal problems have forced us to move on.”

A spokesperson from Sanctuary Management says the band has no comment at this time.

We know what you’re thinking: This is an April Fool’s joke designed to prey on our worst fears. But there’s no joke here, unless you’re counting the band itself, though that appears to have been started in all seriousness.

As far as plans, Weiland will be joining his old Stone Temple Pilot pals for a few reunion shows this summer. And Velvet Revolver will likely soldier on with plans to drop its third album.

All I’ve got to say is that no one in this fine mess has written a song as cool as “Mr. Brownstone.” Well, at least not since Slash actually wrote “Mr. Brownstone.” VR and STP, race to see who can write the next fresh junkie jam. That doesn’t mean you have to use drugs to make it! No one wants that. But please, you can do better than this.

–Margaret Wappler

UPDATE: Scott Weiland speaks! Here is Weiland’s entire statement released this morning by Press Here Publicity, with frustrating punctuation choices retained for authenticity:

“After reading the comment by Duff, Matt, Dave and the illustrious “GUITAR HERO,” Saul Hudson, a.k.a Slash, I find it humorous that the so called four “founding members” of Velvet Revolver, better known to themselves as “the Project” before I officially named the band, would decide to move on without me after I had already claimed the group dead in the water on March 20 in Glasgow. In response to Slash’s comment regarding my commitment, I have to say it is a blatant and tired excuse to cover up the truth. The truth of the matter is that the band had not gotten along on multiple levels for some time. On a musical level, there were moments of joy, inspiration, fun…at times, but let’s not forget the multiple trips to rehab every member of the band had taken (with the exception of one member, no need to mention his name). Personally speaking, I choose to look forward to the future and performing with a group of friends I have known my entire life, people who have always had my back. This also speaks to my commitment to my music and my fellow band mates in STP and to the fans who I feel would much rather watch a group of musicians who enjoy being together as opposed to a handful of discontents who at one time used to call themselves a gang.

p.s. don’t be fooled by veiled trickery

p.p.s good hunting lads, I think Sebastian Bach would be a fantastic choice.”

Well, someone sounds bitter but is there not a hint of affection too? His statement reads like he’s talking to a ex-girlfriend who scorned him but he’s not going to rip into her all the way because boy, did they have chemistry in the sack.

At any rate, the remaining questions are: Will STP really resurrect now that Weiland is back in the fold? Does the world really need an “Interstate Love Song 2008″?

The Raconteurs thwart critics, but maybe that’s a good thing
March 25, 2008 11:56am

The RaconteursLast week, Jack White threw down a glove and ushered the music industry onto what duelers call the field of honor. A press release announced that “Consolers of the Lonely,” the new release from the Raconteurs, White’s band with songwriting pal Brendan Benson, would be issued in all formats today.

The quick turnaround was designed “to get this record to fans, the press, radio, etc., all at the EXACT SAME TIME so that no one has an upper hand on anyone else regarding its availability, reception or perception.”

“The Raconteurs would rather this release not be defined by its first weeks sales, pre-release promotion, or by someone defining it FOR YOU before you get to hear it,” the statement continued.

Always a control freak, White seems to view music culture’s current anarchistic drift as both a bane and an opportunity. His enemy, the statement suggests, is anyone who engages in hype: bloggers, radio programmers, directors of Apple commercials, the publicists supposedly at his service and, of course, critics. He can’t stop every leak — “Consolers” was briefly available through iTunes on Friday, and Indie 103.1 played at least one cut Monday —  but he can try to throw the machine.

Some writers (most eloquently, Jason Gross at PopMatters.com) have wondered if good criticism will get lost in the dismantling process. But what if players in the game of promoting and contextualizing music took White at his word? What if critics got off the release-date train and imagined new ways of approaching recorded music?

Prince to be added to Coachella bill? Or not…
March 18, 2008 4:01pm

Prince3 No word on which day he will crash the party, but Prince will be added to the lineup for the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which runs April 25-27 at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, sources tell me.* No confirmation from the artist’s websites, which seem to be down (or under construction) at the moment. But this certainly adds some meat to the the festival’s slightly protein-starved roster.

Goldfrapp and Aphex Twin were recently announced as additions to the lineup, as well as Serj Tankian, Redd Kross, Kate Nash and Adele (update: Adele, according to Goldenvoice, “is no longer performing.”)

Only 37 days until the desert.

*Correction: Coachella co-producers AEG Live have responded to this post. Brandon K. Phillips, CEO of AEG Live, writes in an email: “Paul Tollett, the head of our Goldenvoice division and our partner in the festival, just called to tell me that the LA Times put on their blog that Prince was playing Coachella. This is absolutely not true… Regardless of what the Times was told, there is no commitment from Prince to play Coachella.” Stay tuned…. this is the Purple One we’re talking about, so anything could happen.

And she sings too?
March 12, 2008 5:15pm

threediamonds400.jpg

By now the sordid details of New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s spectacular crash and burn are well-documented. But, did you know that “Kristen,” nee Ashley Alexandra Dupre, is not just America’s Most Famous Alleged Prostitute. She’s also an R&B singer! We’re guessing the 100,000 plays she’s received today have less to do with the tinny, dated, sub-Ciara club jam “What We Want” than her newfound notoriety. But it is ironic that her most infamous alleged Emperor’s Club VIP connection was a prosecutor of major-label payola shenanigans involving R&B singers.

“This one was inspired by a guy, who taught me not to confuse my dreams with the sounds of the city… I hope you like it,” she writes in her MySpace bio. We have to give her credit for staying remarkably classy throughout the New York Times article and in the legal proceedings so far, and we can’t really imagine what she’s going through now as this story develops. So for that, we’ll give “What We Want” a sympathetic rating of :
