No word on which day he will crash the party, but Prince will be added to the lineup for the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which runs April 25-27 at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, sources tell me.* No confirmation from the artist’s websites, which seem to be down (or under construction) at the moment. But this certainly adds some meat to the the festival’s slightly protein-starved roster.
Goldfrapp and Aphex Twin were recently announced as additions to the lineup, as well as Serj Tankian, Redd Kross, Kate Nash and Adele (update: Adele, according to Goldenvoice, “is no longer performing.”)
Only 37 days until the desert.

*Correction: Coachella co-producers AEG Live have responded to this post. Brandon K. Phillips, CEO of AEG Live, writes in an email: “Paul Tollett, the head of our Goldenvoice division and our partner in the festival, just called to tell me that the LA Times put on their blog that Prince was playing Coachella. This is absolutely not true… Regardless of what the Times was told, there is no commitment from Prince to play Coachella.” Stay tuned…. this is the Purple One we’re talking about, so anything could happen.
UPDATE 4/9/08: Prince to play Coachella

Awesome!!! My faith in Coachella is restored!!!
Thank you Goldenvoice, for displacing Jack Johnson as the headliner!!!
[…] [LA Times] […]
Coachella was great last year. An amazing collection of musicians. Rage Against the Machine, Placebo, Willy Nelson, etc.
But… Jack Johnson? Headlining? Even if the Purple One does make an appearance, I don’t know if that’s enough to get me to drive four hours to the desert and stand around like cattle in the heat all day long.
One amazing musician does not a festival make. Especially when the rest is so jaw-droppingly mediocre.
There is no way this is happening…Prince is super meticulous with the events he plays…and outdoor, 110 degree heat, non-headlining, time-limited shows don’t seem up his alley.
But if pigs fly, good god I am there.
[…] has been three days since Kevin Bronson of The Los Angeles Times published the now infamous story reporting that Prince would be added to Coachella’s 2008 […]
excuse my ignorance but honestly, who is jack johnson? i could not name one song and the name alone reminds me of m.o.r. / dave mathews type stuff. am i wrong? what boat have i missed?
shame about the purple one not playing.
maybe the heads at goldenvoice and aeg should have let the rumor run a little bit longer. ticket sales are hardly booming and nowhere near a sell out, according to a well placed source within their ranks.
[…] After weeks of rumors, promoters of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival announced today that they have indeed inked a deal that will add Prince to the lineup of the massive three-day show in Indio, that which kicks off April 25. […]
