Palm Tree L.A. is a nightclub that offers bowling, as opposed to an alley that calls itself a club just because it books bands and serves Coors. Palm Tree L.A. has plenty of street credibility. Located on the fourth floor of a department store building in Koreatown, the place is hard to find; it's open from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., seven nights a week; and there's even a dress restriction -- no baggy jeans, please. The club also has bouncers and a full bar that extends into two rooms.
PTLA gets rented out for after-hours music and film industry parties, and it's easy to dig why. Its large restaurant serves Korean and Cajun dishes and features live music nightly. The eight-lane "cosmic bowling" alley -- complete with glowing pins and balls -- and the 10-table billiards room have a fantastic sound system. Games cost $3.25 each and shoe rental is $2.
If you think "rock 'n' bowl" means the sneer of grunge, garage, punk or country, then this isn't the alley for you. But if it means the sexy, stylish allure of Roxy Music, David Bowie, house and trance music, then this is an alley to revere. -- Jeremy Rosenberg
