If you're looking for a decent pool table, a bite to eat and cheap, cold beer on the Westside, the House of Billiards is the place to go.
Located in a half-hearted, Tudor-style facade building, this bar is more like a bowling alley than a playground for pool sharks. It's what Al Bundy's rec room might have looked like -- or the one your parents forced you to play in, for that matter. The floor is covered in red industrial-style carpet (to match the brick walls) and most of the furniture is wood veneer or covered in vinyl.
The House of Billiards is open all week long and it's usually not hard to get one of the 20 tables. But on a Friday or Saturday night, the wait can take at least an hour. Use the time to kick back and try a frozen pizza, hot dog or a $1.50 draft beer -- all specialties at the bar. Other distractions include a CD jukebox that has everything from Led Zeppelin to Garth Brooks and three arcade games, including an original Ms. Pac Man that's been running longer than the Energizer bunny. -- Evelyn Sheinkopf
