Situated in the old Beach Club property at 22 Pier is Dragon, Pier Avenue’s answer to Cahuenga Blvd.’s Forbidden City, which is to say a Chinese-themed restaurant, bar and club modeled less after a real Shanghai spot than a big-budget Hollywood recreation of one. There’s a street-parade-style dragon hanging from the ceiling, a giant Buddha or two, and everywhere dark-stained bamboo, deep red paint, slate walls, and stone cut thin enough to look like paper. The hip and hip-hop-friendly crowd are clearly here for other amenities, such as the bumping dancefloor, the reasonably priced fusion menu—which features sushi, stir-fry and tempura for $8 to $12, and wraps, sandwiches, and fish entrees for $9 to $15—and drink specials offered up nightly at the fully stocked bar.
