About
Although being felt up before you even get in the bar is usually not a good sign, at Charlie O's, it's worth having the menacing security guards frisk you on the way in. It's for your protection, anyway, as the area surrounding this sizeable bar is still a bit dangerous at night.
The former dive bar in the heart of downtown L.A. has been drawing in loft-dwelling hipsters lately, after the folks behind Bar 107 took over the management lease in 2007. After a first-round of remodeling in late 2007, Charlie's O's is less scary looking...with an exposed ceiling now kept in place with chicken wire. Still, the edge here remains, with occasional neighborhood crazies finding their way in. But that's why regulars love Charlie O's. It's a bar with character (check the multiple old school pinball games). Now the bar also has upscale beverages, DJs and live music. Good nights here are Fridays and Wednesdays.
A large stage here means the occasional punk band (or hip-hop DJ) might take the stage as you drink cheap PBR from a can. Yes, you too can live the dirty dream downtown...just watch your wallet or purse on the way inside.
