It's not pornography, it's erotica. And thank Larry Flynt we live in anything-goes Los Angeles and not some post-Puritan outpost because, otherwise, this gallery could never survive.
The space itself looks like heaven's waiting room; it's an all-white linoleum floor, white walls, white track lighting and a blue velvet couch for the ideal splash of color. About 80 percent of the work here is photography and all the time it's erotic. The crowd is younger and fairly adventurous. A typical Kaplan opening night reception is said to be half Sin-E-Matic, half high-minded. Calendar Live! wouldn't know -- we're a wee bit shy.
Most of the artists are international, the prices are reasonable, some of the best contemporary frames we've ever seen were attached to a recent Anthony Artiago show, and Todd Kaplan's original inspiration came from French-language Photo magazine.
