About
The Tasende Gallery is an impressive, museum-quality space in the West Hollywood gallery district. The venue combines the expected off-white walls, soft gray trim and swirling slab floors with unexpected touches such as skylight cutouts, off-angle cathedral ceilings and a surprise backstairs sculpture patio starring a Henry Moore piece that is as thick as fog and as bold as the pilot who flies through it.
The art is modern and contemporary, and the names tend toward big, but not bloated. Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Andres Nagel, Jose Luis Cuevas and the political cartoonist Oliphant have been featured here. What else can we say? Jose Tasende's been in business 30 years and he has another space in La Jolla.
Visiting
The gallery is located in the West Hollywood gallery district, at 8808 Melrose Ave., near Robertson Blvd. Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking can be difficult around the gallery because many of the streets are restricted. However, you should have no trouble finding space at the pay parking lots located in various spots in the surrounding neighborhood.
Dining and entertainment
There are numerous dining options within walking distance of the gallery. Murano Restaurant serves up fancy Italian and French cuisine in a chic setting. Melrose Bar & Grill specializes in upscale American cuisine and seafood. And across Santa Monica Blvd., there's Dan Tana's, a local institution where the steaks are delicious and very expensive.
