About
Beloved art provocateur Stuart Regen died, way before his time, in 1998. The gallery Regen ran with his art writer wife, Shaun Caley, carries on. Hidden from plain sight, down an alley in West Hollywood, lies this important Los Angeles gallery. Literally, this is a one-room gallery with very little storage space. But that doesn't matter -- the shows here are colossal.
This is the gallery that internationally recognized painter Lari Pittman chooses to call home. Catherine Opie, Raymond Pettibone, Charles Ray and Liz Larner debut new works here. This is also where you can find top New York artists, such as Richard Prince, Matthew Barney and Elizabeth Payton. All in all, Regen Projects is a must-see -- even if you can't actually see it from the street.
Visiting
The gallery is located in West Hollywood at 633 N. Almont Dr., between Santa Monica Blvd. and Melrose Ave. The actual building is tucked away behind storefronts so you may have trouble spotting it as you drive by. Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bring a pocketful of quarters 'cause the parking in West Hollywood is nasty.
Dining and entertainment
Restaurants in the neighborhood are plentiful and easily walkable from the gallery. Murano Restaurant serves up fancy Italian and French cuisine in a chic setting. Melrose Bar & Grill specializes in upscale American cuisine and seafood. Also nearby, Dan Tana's, a local institution, serves up steaks that are delicious and very expensive.
