About

Located in Pasadena's beautiful historic Playhouse District, the museum is dedicated to the exhibition of California art, architecture and design from 1850 to the present.

The museum's three-story, white-box building was designed by the Los Angeles architectural firm MDA Johnson Favaro Architecture and Urban Design. It features more than 10,000 square feet of exhibition space, as well as a rooftop terrace that offers a view of the San Gabriel Mountains to the north.

Past exhibitions at the museum include "Spirit Totems: Herb Alpert Sculpture 1995-2005," "Dark Metropolis: Irving Norman's Social Realism," "California Colors: Hanson Puthuff" and "Drive-by Shooting: April Greinman Digital Photography."

Visiting

The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, 12 p.m. to  5 p.m. The museum is closed July 4th, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Admission is $6 for adults, and $4 for students and seniors.

There are two deals worth noting for the budget-minded visitor. The museum offers free admission to all the first Friday of every month. There's also a special offer with the Pacific Asia Museum on Colorado and Los Robles -- if you attend both museums in the same day, you can receive 50% off admission at the second museum when you present proof of entrance.

Free parking is available on the ground level of the museum and additional public parking is available across the street on Union.

To take public transportation to the museum, get on the Metro Gold Line and exit at the Memorial Park station. Walk south on Arroyo Parkway one block to Union Street. Turn left and head east on Union for about six blocks. The museum is on the south side of Union, just before Oakland Ave.

Dining and entertainment

There are plenty of dining options within walking distance of the museum. McCormick & Schmick's is a better-than-average chain seafood restaurant. The Pumpernickel Delicatessen offers your standard soup-and-sandwich lunch. For something simple and familiar, there's California Pizza Kitchen.
