About
Visitors expecting dinosaurs will instead be confronted with items like a quirky display devoted to the radar-equipped Deprong Mori bat, a horn that grew from a woman's head, a diorama of a rain forest where crazed stink ants cling to vines and the incessant barking of a coyote head.
The brainchild of former movie miniaturist David Wilson, this museum's exhibits illuminate arcane subjects, among them, notions that traditional science has laughed at, rejected or refused to acknowledge. (And sometimes, as you'll see, with good reason.) Forget Ripley's, this is the city's true "Believe It or Not" site.
Visiting
The museum is located at 9341 Venice Boulevard in Culver City. Hours of operation are Thursdays, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.; and Fridays through Sundays, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Suggested admission is $5 for adults and $3 for kids. Children under 12 get in free. There is no on-site parking at the museum, but there is free two-hour parking at several public lots in the surrounding neighborhood. Metered street parking is also available. For those who wish to use public transportation, you can take the MTA bus lines 33, 333 or 436, as well as the Santa Monica Municipal Bus line 12, all of which will stop in front of the museum.
Dining and entertainment
You'll find numerous restaurant options within walking distance of the museum. Emerald Restaurant is a neighborhood favorite, serving high quality Thai cuisine at moderate prices. Novecento Pasta & Grill is also popular with the locals for its wide selection of Italian food and wines. A little farther away, Mo'dear's Country Kitchen serves soul food and Southern cuisine.
