McLean Gallery

California Plein Air painting is alive and well at McLean Gallery, where artists such as Kathleen Kiefer and Larry Horowitz continue the impressionistic tradition that makes the most of the West Coast's particularly brilliant play of light and color. The gallery, one tenant of the attractive Malibu Country Mart just off the Pacific Coast Highway, is bright and airy and offers sculpture, glassware, and earthenware in addition to paintings and works on paper. Owner Denyse McLean invites visitors to touch many of the sculptural works, including the sinuous alabasters of David Botwinick. Lovers of the abstract should look for the works on paper by Caryn Roseman and Siri Berg's woodcut collages on Japanese paper. Of particular interest is the combed ceramic ware of artist Barbara Willis, who recently reemerged at age 80 after enjoying success in the 1940s and '50s. -- Leann Davis Alspaugh
