This is a preeminent photography gallery, combining old works with new, international artists with local ones. And then there's the tennis ball- and rope doll-carrying gallery dog named Lizette Model.
Owner Jan Kesner has been in art her whole life: she attended the Art Institute of Chicago, got a BFA in photography, an MFA in experimental filmmaking and later opened her gallery in 1987. Many of her shows are themed: "Noted Women Photographers of the '20s and '30s," "Bauhaus Photography," "Diane Arbus and her Artistic Lineage" and "Figure/Form: The Nude in the 20th Century." Others shows are solos, such as Arne Svenson's "Las Vegas."
Kesner exhibits Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Nan Goldin, Yousef Karsh, Dorthea Lange, Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Tina Modotti and Alfred Steiglitz. L.A. names of note include Richard Mizrack, Roger Minick, Donald Blumberg and that photographic chronicler of polyglot Los Angeles, John Humble.
