Located in Malibu, the Getty Villa is a faux-Roman residence J. Paul Getty built in 1974 for his art collection and is the only museum of Greek and Roman antiquities in America — related to the Getty Center in the way the Cloisters in upper Manhattan, devoted to the art of medieval Europe, are to its parent, the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The renovated museum has 48,000 square feet of gallery space displaying 1,200 artifacts — not to mention four gardens with more than 300 flowering plants.
In recent years, the Getty Villa has made headlines for its alleged involvement in looted artifacts and other antiquities that were procured under suspicious circumstances. A series of court cases have resulted in the return of some of the museums most prized artifacts.
Visiting
The Getty Villa is located at 17985 Pacific Coast Highway. Take the I-10 (Santa Monica Freeway) west until it turns into Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) going north along the Pacific Ocean. Continue on Route 1 for approximately five miles to the Getty Villa.
The museum is open everyday except Tuesday, Wednesday, New Year's, July 4, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays to Mondays.
Important: Admission to the Getty Villa is free but is restricted at all times by timed tickets, which you must reserve in advance. Please visit http://www.getty.edu/visit/hours/ or call (310) 440-7300 to make your reservations.
Parking is on-site and is available to all ticket holders for $8 per car. Each Villa ticket allows you to bring up to three children ages 15 and under with you in one car.
Dining and entertainment
Dining at the museum is limited to the Cafe at the Getty Villa, which serves casual Mediterranean cuisine and features indoor and outdoor seating. Menu choices include soup, salads, panini, pizzas, pastas and desserts.
There's also a Coffee Kiosk at the cafe entrance that serves coffee, hot tea, espresso drinks, lemonade and bottled beverages, as well as limited food options.
For other dining options, you'll need to drive. Atrio Cucina Ristorante offers an impressive range of Italian cuisine, as does Dante Palisades Restaurant.
Mort's Palisades Delicatessen offers a simple but impressive lunch menu. An ideal place for an informal sit-down meal.
