The Stern name is significant in the local art world. No less than four Sterns are either celebrated gallery owners or art historians. This here is brother George's Early California Impressionists and Modernists gallery. If it's Plein Aire, it's plain here.
George Stern's gallery is softer and less edgy than contemporary ones. A Yamaha boom box provides light rock and New Age background music, and decorative kitty-cats sit on desks and tables. This setting befits the serene landscapes that dot the walls.
The gallery often features the genre's biggest names. In fact, the recent all-star show, "One Hundred Years of California Art," included works by Franz Bischoff, Edgar Payne, Granville Redmond and William Wendt. Legend Guy Rose's art gets hung here, too. A previous show featured works for the "beginning collector." Prices stayed under $15,000.
