About
Self-Help Graphics, located in East L.A., is an organization that strives to educate and maintain the cultural identity of the local Latino community. Latino heritage is honored and represented there through classes and lectures on current events and exhibits influenced by Latino traditions.
The two-story building on the street's corner has a facade of tile work: broken plates and pottery, and chips of mirror and glass. This was all done in the mosaic tradition of Spanish architect Gaudi. In the back parking lot, an example of fine craft is seen in the beautiful, larger-than-life Virgin Mary standing on an altar. The altar is done in intricate tile work surrounded by cacti and burning candles.
Art classes are offered and studio space is available for young artists. The downstairs gift shop sells handcrafted jewelry and functional art. While you're at Self-Help, make sure to inquire about the organization's legendary founder, Sister Karen the nun.
