About
The name comes from a Mayan celestial messenger, an opener of doors to new worlds. Given the ambitious contemporary works the owners tend to show here, that phrase couldn't be more true.
Originally, Chac Mool was a showcase exclusively for Latin American art, but the owners rapidly broadened their horizons to reflect more of the depth and breadth of their various holdings. Not on display, but are included in the two owners' inventory, are works by Frankenthaler, Schnabel, Ruscha, Hockney and Sam Francis.
The exhibits shown here can be spectacular. A recent batch of new sculptures by Mineo Mizuno was a real stunner -- monolithic slabs and sleek repeating shrines. That was followed by the more playful, colorful prints of Stephanie Kopelson. Who knows what will be next?
