About
Orange County's largest museum, the Charles W. Bowers Memorial Museum was founded in 1936 as a city-run museum devoted primarily to the history of Orange County. In the mid-1980's, the old museum closed its doors and, in October of 1992, the institution was reborn as the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art (some six times larger than the original).
Since then, the museum has presented over 45 special exhibitions from all over the world, opened six permanent galleries and watched its membership grow. The museum specializes in historic antiquities as well as fine arts.
Notable past exhibitions include the Dead Sea Scrolls, "Ansel Adams: Classic Images," "Tibet: Treasures from the Roof of the World" and "The World of Etruscans."
Visiting
Located in Santa Ana, the Bowers Museum is an easy drive from Los Angeles. Take the I-5 south and exit at Main St. South. The museum's address is 2002 N Main St.
All-day public parking is available directly north of the museum. Street parking (free and metered) is available in the surrounding neighborhood.
The Metrolink and Amtrak trains stop at the Anaheim Station and the Santa Ana Station. You'll need to take a taxi from either station to get to the museum.
The museum is open every day except Mondays, July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On the fourth Thursday of every month, the museum stays open to 8 p.m.
General admission is $19 on weekends, $16 on weekdays. Students and seniors pay $14 / $12, while kids under six get in free.
The museum offers free admission to Santa Ana residents, with proof of residency (e.g., driver's license, utility bill, etc), on the first Sunday and third Tuesdays of every month.
Dining and entertainment
Tangata is a fine-dining restaurant located inside the museum and serves a diverse menu of California cuisine. The restaurant is open solely for lunch Tuesdays through Sundays.
Visitors will find a limited range of dining options just three blocks south of the museum on 17th Street. Norm's Restaurant is a diner-style establishment that serves sandwiches, burgers, steaks and breakfast dishes. New China Restaurant is part of a local chain that serves modest Chinese cuisine.
