Here at the Fairfax and 3rd Farmers Market, watermelon sells for $2.49 a pound, sweet honey melons are 69 cents, and there's the familiar smell of gumbo, fresh-baked pies, and -- yes -- tourists in the air.
Unbeknownst to many, there's also a community art gallery on the premises. It's upstairs, near the number three and four entranceways, and it's a huge cafeteria-looking space complete with round tables, pastel green folding chairs, checkerboard linoleum flooring, flourescent light and white institutional ceiling panels.
The Beverly Hills Art League has been running this space for years. The League and its gallery are non-profit, and any member can show works here. Membership dues are a scant $20, and there's not even a jury. This policy makes for a very wide mix of professionals and amateurs.
No nudes are permitted -- Farmers Market rules -- and sunny, non-confrontational work is the de facto rule. The room is air-conditioned and a welcome place to eat lunch. Art classes are held here on Fridays and Saturdays.
