About
Formerly known as the Museum of Western Heritage, the Autry Museum was founded in 1988 by country and western musician and actor Gene Autry and now includes three institutions: the Museum of the American West, the Southwest Museum of the American Indian and the Institute for the Study of the American West.
The museum explores the experiences and perceptions of the peoples of the American west through exhibitions, cultural and artistic programs and an extensive collection of southwestern art and artifacts. The Los Angeles Zoo is within walking distance across from the Autry's main entrance, if you're in the mood for wild life as well as Western history.
Tips: If you're at the Autry for the day, no need to drive out of Griffith park to find lunch. The Autry's on-site cantina features a full array of affordable lunches and snacks, including salads, fresh coffee and sandwiches. A pleasant outdoor patio with tables and chairs offers a relaxing place to take a break from learning all about the American Southwest.
