About
Located literally across the street from the La Brea Tar Pits and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Ashkenazy Gallery's greatest asset is perhaps director Arnold Ashkenazy's courtly Old World charm. This gracious gentleman stocks an eclectic assortment of 19th and 20th century works in virtually every medium, with prices ranging from reasonable to blue chip.
Not at all stuffy, Ashkenazy's is a bit like visiting an uncle who has an extensive art collection because he loves art rather than investments. Among artists and works on view: Belgian painter Bernard Stern; painter and decorative artist Jules Pascin; the figurative bronzes of Vahan Gregory; Lowell Reiland's elegant copper and asphalt sculptures; acrylics by Peter Max (generally not in the 1970s-inflected style we're most familiar with); and granite works by Texas sculptor Jess Bautista Moroles. -- Leann Davis Alspaugh
