Lakers sports bars guide
Hold tight, Los Angeles. We’re almost at the Promised Land. Having won the Western Conference finals against the Denver Nuggets, the Lakers are now on their way to take it all as NBA champions. While on the trek to victory, legions of Angelenos will be piling into L.A. sports bars, drinking in celebration and supporting the team they call their own. And because winning puts others in the giving spirit, sports bars listed in the beginning part of the roundup are providing special promotions during the playoff games. Gosh, don't you love L.A.? We love it!
Located along scenic Colorado Boulevard near Old Town Pasadena, the 35er is a lively billiard hall with a full bar downstairs that is open on weekends and caters to lovers of all things sports-related. Monday night specials on pool and beer attract locals for a round or two while watching a game—there are many to choose from—on one of 20-plus flat-screen TVs. During the Finals playoffs, the 35er will be offering $9 pitchers of Miller Light. To that we say: fill 'er up!
Barney’s Beanery is dark, rustic and plastered with so much kitsch that pretentiousness doesn’t stand a chance of survival. There are 40 screens with nothing but “the game” on. Add the extensive beer list—over 130 brews on hand—and a menu that lists everything from deep-fried bar food to fresh omelets, and you’ve got yourself a sports bar everyone loves. Unfortunately, everyone does love Barney’s, which is why scoring a table can be a real test of endurance. Fortunately, most of the Lakers/Magic games are scheduled at the same time as Barney's happy hour. Between 4-7 p.m., patrons can get 1/2 off all beer and well drinks.
Big Dean’s is the definitive beach bar, a place where flip-flops, tank tops and relaxed attitudes prevail. Why fake ambiance when everyone is game-watching or people-watching anyway? Wood picnic tables fill the beach-front patio, where sun-soaked tourists fuel up on pints and burgers while local sports fanatics fill up on three-peat memories half a decade old (and counting...). For the playoffs, Big Dean's is marking a $1 off draft beers.
Defense! Offense! Garlic wings! Televised sports every which way you turn and garlic wings rule the roost at Big Wangs. The bar is in “the barn” and subtle country murals adorn the walls—but this is a sports bar that doesn’t beat you over the head with its country theme. It’s pretty much all about the game, the pool table and the flirtation among cool Hollywood 20-somethings taking a break from the velvet-rope scene. If you're at Big Wangs to watch the game, and not the people, then you'll be happy to know they're offering big discounts including $3 Miller Light draft beers and $2.50 PBRs.
A lively restaurant/bar decorated with a healthy dose of kitsch, Birds is a neighborhood joint where chicken is always the special of the day and cocktails are every bit as important as the main course. Throw in a birdcage for the "go-go dancers" after midnight and you’ve got a scene brimming with lascivious singles. In honor of the Lakers playing in the Finals, Birds is serving up purple shooters for $5. We don't know what's in it, but we've been guaranteed it's tasty, and best of all, strong.
Known as the West Coast Cubby bar, this is where Windy City expats gather and share their love for the Bulls, the Cubs and hot dogs. Since the Bulls didn't make it to the Finals, patrons will undoubtedly be cheering for, if not the Lakers, the drinks deals—1/2 off all beers and well drinks.
Healthy bar food (yes, it’s possible), a kitchen led by a five-star chef and a wide selection of imported beers make this upscale Westside sports bar the place where young, single, beautiful people go to watch ESPN—and each other. If you catch a Lakers game during their happy hour between 4-8 p.m., they'll be offering $3 beers and $4 well drinks. Now that's a steal!
This UCLA-adjacent place screams Spring Break more than sports bar, but it does show games for a rowdy group of undergrads and post-grads. Lakers games normally run during two-for-one happy hours, in which case you’ll remember going to watch the game, but nothing that happened during it.
This super-duper sports bar is packed with 40 screens and multiple satellite receivers, so no single second of any televised game is missed. How's this for deals? During their happy hour, you can get well drinks for $3.50, and pitchers of Bud, Bud Light, Coors, Coors Light, Miller and Miller Light for $6.50.
More frat party than fairy tale, the Happy Ending Bar and Restaurant in Hollywood is a hazing-free home away from home for beefcakes and the women who love them. And what better happy ending than $5 well drinks, $1 off pints and $11 Bud or Bud Light pitchers? We don't want this story to end.
Hollywood Billiards is a glorious name brand in the dank religion of Los Angeles pool. On the bright side, during their happy hour, they''re selling all beers for under $4.
Where better to catch the game than a place where bouncy inflatables are practically part of the wardrobe? Much the same way devoted Playboy subscribers are in it for the articles, Hooters devotees come for the chicken wings, brews and sometimes to watch sports. Early Finals games fall right in the middle of Hooters happy hour which runs from 3-6 p.m. At that time, you can purchase $2.50 beers and $3 well drinks.
Bruins are regulars over at Q’s, especially on college game days, when students drunkenly pack themselves into booths and attempt to cheer for what’s-his-face. During the Lakers playoffs, expect miniskirted patrons partaking in drink and appetizer happy-hour specials ($10 pitchers, $4 well drinks, $3 pints, complimentary food) from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“I can’t believe it’s not Boston!” should be Sonny McLean’s catch phrase. The bar offers 22 beers on tap and a menu with New England favorites such as lobster rolls, fried clam bellies and, of course, clam chowder. During the Finals, you can get a $1 off all beer and wine.
A raucous Los Feliz dive that draws equal parts crooked-haircut, skinny-jean clad artists, white-hat-wearing beefy super jocks and lecherous old men who drink VO whiskey straight up and call women “doll.” If you're watching the Lakers game at this Los Feliz spot, then you'll be happy to know they're offering a $1 off Amstel Light, Newcastle and Heineken beers.
At Arnie Morton's everything is big—and not just the steaks. It's a place where, guaranteed, you'll never stare down a tiny portion wondering how a restaurant has the chutzpah to charge so much for so little.
Located in the former Le Porcini Ristorante space, bacaro l.a. is a new wine bar in a neighborhood not known for upscale merlots.
The Coffee Table restaurants in Silver Lake and Eagle Rock are known for their big plates of wholesome food, but this attached lounge in Eagle Rock is entirely different. There are red booths surrounded by huge TVs and an online juke box, and the nutrition mostly comes in the form of 16 draft beers and 100 bottled selections. And then there's the chili fries and hot dogs. So, perhaps less healthful but more fun than the restaurant next door.
A classic dive bar, Del's Saloon gained some recent notoriety when it was featured in the Judd Apatow movie "Knocked Up," but it's been a beloved West L.A. spot for years.
El Guapo has cheesy, fratty and sporty in spades and sometimes there's nothing wrong with that.
Though British and Irish brews are thoroughly represented and all kinds of beers are celebrated, the emphasis is on Belgian. Drink up!
Billed as the South Bay's sports headquarters, Mr. Pockets is where it's all sports, all the time.
This upscale sports bar delivers real-life fun on 50 flat-screens spread throughout the bar. The upstairs level provides a smoking lounge.
Most sports bar inevitably get overrun by the fans of a particular team. It’s just the nature of the beast. Yankee Doodles, on the other hand, is so vast and has so many televisions that such a thing has never really happened.
Size, or rather length, does matter at the Yard House, where beer is doled out in half yards.
