Top 10 coolest coffee shops on the Westside

Just like neighborhood dive bars, cool Westside coffee shops have become about as scarce as a non-smoker at an AA meeting since Starbucks moved into town. What happened to all the funky, independently owned and operated coffee shops? Congo Square on Third Street Promenade? Driven out by increasing rents even before the celebrated Midnight Special bookstore was. Anastasia’s Asylum in Santa Monica? It became the Living Room, which despite the optimistic new name, promptly died. How about the glorious upstairs-downstairs Van Gogh’s Ear in Venice? You guessed — it was cut off years ago. But look a little closer, and you'll see some unique independent coffee shops hanging on. And by independent coffee shop, I don’t mean a boutique chain, some fancy café with a French press, or a giant book store that happens to serve java on the side. I mean the beatnik, bohemian best the West L.A.-Santa Monica-Venice corridor has to offer.

1. Unurban Coffee House   Santa Monica

What Disneyland's "It's a Small World" ride is to amusement park attractions, Unurban Coffee House is to local coffee shops -- it's quite simply the center of caffeinated cool on the Westside.

2. Novel Cafe   Santa Monica

If you were a lot smarter, this two-story lending library-café could be your living room, where chess players congregate and several writers have taken up residence.

3. Cacao Coffee House   Westwood / West L.A.

It's small, a little grungy and the wi-fi may or may not be working on any given day, but the vibe at this Tiki- and Martian-themed Westside coffeehouse and late-night hangout is pure cool.

4. 18th Street Coffee House   Santa Monica

Bob Dylan may not own the place (as has long been rumored), but this roomy, wood-and-brick, old-timey coffeehouse is pretty cool nonetheless.

5. The Talking Stick   Venice

A homey, colorful, art-laced coffee shop patronized by everyone from local parents and their toddlers to students soaking up free wi-fi along with the caffeinated drinks, the Talking Stick is a virtual community center.

6. Cow's End   Venice

The definition of a neighborhood joint: If you see someone getting an organic coffee there one week, you’ll probably see that same person doing the same thing every week thereafter.

7. Joni's Coffee Roasting Cafe   Marina del Rey

Joni Aragon runs this legendary coffee shop in Marina Del Rey, which swirls with good vibes and friendly people seven days a week.

10. Cafe Balcony   Westwood / West L.A.

You might miss this tiny storefront cafe tucked into a nook just off Santa Monica Boulevard if you're not among the initiated -- or if you come too early (the shop doesn't open until noon).
