Christmas Eve dining extravaganza

When Christmas rolls around you just want to eat, and eat, and eat. Calories mean nothing to you because the end of the year is when you shut out the inner neurotic skinny person living in your brain. After the New Year you'll begin that dialogue again, but for a few gorgeous days you're just going to be with your family. And eat. A lot. Here are some places where you can do just that.

1. Bar Pintxo   Santa Monica

A tiny tapas bar with real Spanish flair. Just a few tables and lots of standing room. Still, the small bites go way beyond what you'd find at a neighborhood joint in Madrid. However, this season the restaurant is celebrating with Madrid flair. On Christmas Eve the festivities begin at 3 p.m. (midnight in Madrid). From then on you can nosh on small plates, traditional tapas, and Spanish desserts. Wash it all down Cava Spanish Champagne.

2. Clancy's Crab Broiler   Glendale

It's not fancy, but this is where folks in Glendale go for seafood. And, there's no way that you can argue with the family-oriented restaurant's decade-old Christmas Eve tradition of giving customers a gift certificate for the exact amount of their food bill..

3. Jax Bar & Grill   Glendale

Jax is also run by Clancy's owner Jeff Williams. It too is offering gift certificates to customers totaling the amount of their food bill. It's hard to beat that kind of incentive.

The price is $90; add an additional $60 for wine pairings. This is a good idea because Wine Spectator once declared Valentino's 2,500-labels-long wine list “the greatest wine cellar of them all."
