Munchin' at the Junction
If you plan on attending this year's Sunset Junction festival chances are all that music and walking around in the sun will make you hungry. Here's a round-up of eateries that'll help soothe the monster rumbling in your belly. Oh, and we threw in some bars for good measure. Liquid sustenance is not to be discounted.
The romantic Cafe Stella transports diners from Sunset Junction to a charming Paris boulevard. They usually run Junction specials but since they are so "gratefully busy" these days they aren't offering anything out of the ordinary.
Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea is revered for its adherence to "direct trade," a way of buying beans that ensures economic and environmental sustainability for coffee farmers. Maybe that's why eco-conscious Silver Lakers, of both the tattooed and the yoga-mom varieties, flock to this place like. During the Junction Intelligentsia is preparing to have tons of $3 iced coffee and tea at the ready. Refills are only 50 cents.
What do ground beef-and-pickle tacos have in common with razor-thin young women in skinny jeans with nostril-length bangs? Both can be found in the penumbral glow of muted-red candlelight at Malo, Silver Lake's natty neighborhood taqueria. Expect this place to be packed during the Junction. On special: $8 blended Casa Noble margaritas in both regular and strawberry flavor (normally $12). Also, $4 Tecate and Tecate Light will be served on the patio, along with specials on Dewar's.
Indie rock meets Spanish grotto meets abandoned film set at this longtime Silver Lake institution. Junction specials are few, but there will be a number of specially made tapas including calamari frito and ceviche along with Mexican street food such as tacos and churros, which will run between $4 and $8.
This crusty 24-hour paradise for the almost-homeless set makes a variety of astoundingly good and cheap sandwiches.
Beer is king at this low-key neighborhood grill. For the Junction expect a vibrant beer garden patio scene and loads of handcrafted $5 pints.
On the edge of grandeur: The new Cliff's Edge restaurant certainly has location, location, location; even if it's not obvious. They're not doing anything out of the ordinary this weekend, but their gorgeous back patio is worth the detour.
Vegan and Silver Lake are like peanut butter and jelly; it's hard to think of one without conjuring up images of the other. It's amazing that until Flore Vegan came along the neighborhood had nowhere to feed its most high-maintenance members.
Outside, Casbah Café in Silver Lake is a riot of café tables, potted roses and lavender. Inside, local writers and dreamers set up for a long stay at the marble-topped tables. Relax with a refreshing iced mint tea for $2.50.
Tantra has the design savvy and sprawling layout of the latest generation of L.A.'s restaurant-slash-clubs. Some of the best dishes are to be found in the list of à la carte vegetables. And those include fiery black lentils (dal) cooked overnight in the heat retained by the tandoori oven. Specials this weekend include: Mojitos and margaritas priced to move at $5 and beers $3. Tantra will open early for lunch both Sat. and Sun.
Every day is Cinco de Mayo at El Conquistador, and although that might sound like fun in theory, in practice it has left many a formerly happy reveler with a tragically aching head and a queasy belly. The manager says that they're just offering their "regular margaritas that are the talk of the town." $10.50 for 16 ounces.
Farmers market-fresh gelato in rich, delicate flavors like creamy pistachio, mango and chocolate martini.
This cozy sushi restaurant is offering a special $4 menu of beer and rolls and will be open from noon until midnight on both Saturday and Sunday.
Tacos Delta doesn't look like much from the street, but it has a lovely tree-shaded patio out back with mismatched tablecloths and plastic seats. If you spent too much time carousing with Silver Lake rockers last night, the menudo here in the morning will help your head.
The patrons at this eastside neighborhood bar may not be as working-class conventional as the crew of "Cheers," but you certainly have just as many characters. During Sunset Junction Akbar will open at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and it will unleash folks onto its dance floor at 7 p.m. There will be D.J.s on both nights.
4100 is dark, sleek and very sexy. It is also almost impossible to get into during Sunset Junction, unless waiting in Disneyland-like lines is your cup of whisky.
Fresh, thoughtfully prepared, upscale-café fare in a prim and proper setting with street-side tables and a friendly wait staff.
Located next door to the neighborhood watering hole Akbar, the Kitchen has a varied menu and attentive service.
