Los Angeles Earth Day events, 2009
Chalk it up to a weak economy but Earth Day 2009 isn't the big shindig that last year's celebration was. Still, every year on April 22, it's nice to celebrate our best ideals for clean water, clean air and sustainable living.
For L.A.'s second annual Earth Day celebration, they're not closing down Wilshire Boulevard like last year. Instead, they're offering a day's worth of green activities on the lawn between Oxford and Serrano streets. Consider taking the bus or riding your bike, as the organizers of this event are still pushing for a Car Free Day. Note that we didn't say Free Car Day. Performances from an El Salvadorian dance troupe (Ballet Folklorico de El Salvador ASOSAL), Suzanne Teng & Mystic Journey, Naked Rhythm and more.
Two days of post-Earth Day celebrations. Vendors, zero waste demonstrations and live entertainment outside of the Cahuenga Branch of the L.A. Public Library.
Though an Earth Day Ball conjures images of environmental activists wearing shimmering gowns, the "ball" is actually a large orb of garbage. This eco event involves discarded plastic bags artfully tangled into a mound on the grass next to El Conquistador. The Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce hopes to make Sunset Junction a "bring your own bag" shopping district and will use the trash globe as a terrifying educational aid in local schools. Be on the lookout for the bag Monster, which ambles about in a suit of 500 shopping bags -- one person's average yearly consumption.
A day after Earth Day celebrate with local comedians and alums from Comedy Central and the "Late Show" including co-creator of "Chappelle's Show," Neal Brennan
Hosted by actress julianne Moore, this live cooking competition features three noteworthy eco-chefs -- Andrew Kirschner, Robert Danhi and CC -- battling it out to see who can make the tastiest and most eco-friendly dish. One of the three judges is local chef and caterer Akasha Richmond of Culver City restaurant Akasha. The goal is to raise awareness of the importance of eco-friendly foods, soy in particular. No surprise given that it's sponsored by SOYJOY in association with nonprofit Gen Art.
Staged on the Malibu Pier, this music and arts festival benefits the Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection of oceans, waves and beaches.
